As an artist who specializes in resin art, I am often captivated by the versatility and beauty of resin. From creating stunning ocean-like waves on a serving tray to crafting intricate designs on surfboards, resin’s potential seems limitless. However, this powerful medium requires a deep understanding and respect for its chemical properties to ensure both the artist's safety and the safety of those who use the final product.
Recently, MGA Entertainment's Miniverse Make it Mini Sets were recalled due to significant safety concerns. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), "The recalled Make It Mini sets contain resins that, when liquid, can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation or sensitization when inhaled, touched, or ingested by children or adults. The resins contain acrylates (hydroxyethylmethacrylate 'HEMA' and isobornyl acrylate 'IBOA') in amounts prohibited in children’s products by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. After the resins cure, they no longer present this hazard."
The Miniverse Make it Mini Sets were undeniably cute and engaging, sparking creativity in both children and adults. However, the danger lies in the uncured state of the resin included in these sets. When liquid, resins can pose significant health risks. Acrylates like HEMA and IBOA can cause severe skin, eye, and respiratory irritation. In some cases, they can even lead to sensitization, a condition where repeated exposure leads to allergic reactions.
Resin allergies and sensitization are not uncommon, especially among those who frequently work with resin without proper safety measures. Symptoms can range from mild skin irritation to more severe respiratory issues. Sensitization occurs when the body becomes hypersensitive to a substance following repeated exposure. This means that even a small amount of resin can trigger an allergic reaction in sensitized individuals.
In my art studio, safety is paramount. My background in chemistry from UCSD has equipped me with the knowledge to handle resin correctly and safely. Every piece of art I create undergoes a meticulous process, considering temperature, humidity, and precise mixing ratios. I use custom-mixed proprietary pigments and eco-friendly wood products, combined with food-safe, heat, and UV-resistant epoxy resin. This not only ensures the aesthetic appeal of the final product but also guarantees its safety for everyday use.
Unlike the recalled Miniverse sets, the resin art pieces from The Art of MVP are created with fully cured, high-quality materials that do not pose health risks once cured. Each piece is hand-painted and finished to mimic the depth and movement of the ocean, bringing a sleek pop of relaxation into your home decor. Supported by my husband Sean and a dedicated team, I continue to push the boundaries of functional art, always prioritizing safety and quality.
The recall of MGA Entertainment's Miniverse Make it Mini Sets serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of understanding and respecting the materials we work with. While these miniature sets were charming, their potential to cause harm due to improper resin handling cannot be ignored. As a resin artist, I am committed to educating others about safe resin practices and providing art that is not only beautiful but also safe.
